KATHMANDU, May 12: UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal on Wednesday said the big three parties will forge consensus on all contentious issues within the next couple of days.

In a meeting with Speaker Subash Chandra Nembang, Dahal said his party is holding talks with other political parties at various levels. “We will end the current political deadlock by settling all the contentious issues within next two days,” Nembang quoted Dahal as saying. [break]

The prime minister had urged the Maoists to come for dialogue on Sunday, a day after the Maoists withdrew their six-day long nationwide general strike.

Speaker Nembang told Dahal that indecision on the part of the political parties on Constituent Assembly (CA) term extension would imperil the ongoing peace process. He also stressed on the need to arrive at a decision at the earliest as they were running short of time.

The CA term, if not extended, expires on May 28. It would take 17 days to extend the CA´s term and at least seven days to amend the constitution to that effect should the Speaker choose to use his discretionary powers. However, the term can be extended in four days if a full House chooses to do so.

“It would be better if we give an option of seven days given the fact that we merely have 16 days before the CA term expires,” said Nembang.

Dahal said his party was serious about safeguarding the achievements of Jana Aandolan II. “We will move ahead in a responsible manner,” Nembang quoted Dahal as saying. “We are firm in our belief that the CA should not be dissolved. In fact, we have been fighting all along to safeguard the achievements. We will not let them go down the drain,” Dahal added.

Talking to media persons at his office, Nembang said he is very much optimistic after his talks with Dahal. “I am very much optimistic after my talks with Chairman Dahal,” he said.

Nembang said that parties should develop an integrated concept about extending the CA term as the Constitutional Council has demanded preliminary draft of the constitution a month before its promulgation. He has also expedited consultations with top leaders of other political parties.
