Chitwan locals call of protest

CHITWAN, July 27: Chitwan locals who have been staging sit-in protest over death of a villager allegedly by police assault finally called off protest program after an agreement with the local administration.



Authorities have agreed to form a team to probe the incident and provide Rs 500,000 as compensation to deceased´s family members. [break]



However, police have been denying any maltreatment. According to spokesperson of District Police Office Chitwan DSP Rabi Raj Poudel, 42-year-old Patahi Darai of Mangalpur VDC died in course of treatment and denied any involvement of the police in the incident. Darai had sustained injuries on his head.



“A group of drunkards ran away after seeing a police patrol team at around 10 pm on July 22. Police rescued a man who fell down while trying to run and took him to his house. After learning he was serious, our team took him to Chitwan Medical College for treatment,” Poudel said.
