DADELDHURA, May 4: A child was killed and another injured when a stray bomb went off in a remote village of Baitadi district on Saturday evening.
The deceased has been identified as Ishwar Bishta, 11-year-old son of Krishna Singh Bishta, a resident of Basulinga VDC-2 of Baitadi district. [break]
According to the police, the explosion occurred when Ishwar was fiddling with the bomb, which he mistook for some normal object. Dipak Bishta, six-year-old son of Jaya Bahadur Bishta, of the same village, who was playing with Ishwar, has also been injured in the blast.
While Ishwar died on the spot, Krishna was rushed to District Hospital of Baitadi, which is one hour-walk from Basulinga village.
According to DSP Kamal Kharel, chief of District Police Office of Baitadi, a police team has already been deployed to Basuling village to examine the incident.
Police suspect the bomb that went off in Basulinga might have been abandoned by Maoist combatants during the war. One year ago, in this same village, three children had been killed when a similar stray bomb exploded.
Basuling is one of villages worst-affected by the Maoist war in Baitadi.
In seven years after the end of the Maoist war, many children have been killed and dozens more injured by bombs and improvised explosive devices that are still lying around.
