KATHMANDU, Jan 19: Export of ceramic products increased by 75.10 percent in the first quarter of current fiscal year compared to export figures of the same period last year.

According to Federation of Handicraft Associations of Nepal (FHAN), the country exported ceramics worth Rs 8.86 million in the first three months of 2010/11.[break]

Similarly, the demand for Nepali ceramic products increased by 80 percent in 2010, according to the exporters. Nepal´s ceramic products are mostly exported to European countries and the United States.

“Our products are unique as they are completely hand made. They are also competitive in terms of quality. It is because of these features that the demand for these products is growing in both local and international market,” said Chandra Prasad Kachhepati, executive director of Sana Hastakala - an exporter of Nepali handicraft products. Encouraged by rise in demand, Kachhepati expects the export of ceramic products through Sana Hastakala to cross Rs 10 million this year.

Sana Hastakala had introduced stoneware ceramics for the first time in Nepal 2 years ago. It has been exporting stone ware ceramics to countries like Italy, Canada and Japan.

Ramila Sharma, who looks after production and supply chains at Sana Hastakala, said they were dealing with three varieties of ceramic -- terracotta, earthen ware and stoneware.

“Earlier, we used to receive more demands for plain ceramic products. But this year, we are receiving more orders for stone ware and painted ceramics,” Sharma said. She further informed that stoneware ceramics cost double than the earthen aware as they are more attractive and durable.

Swoyambhu Ratna Tuladhar, CEO of Yak and Yeti Enterprises, said exports of handicrafts could grow multi-fold if the government came up with policies to reduce transportation costs. “Being a landlocked country, we have different constraints. The government should address them,” Tuladhar added.

Along with international market, the demand for ceramic products in local market is also growing, according to entrepreneurs. “Local hotels and restaurants are buying ceramics products like dinner plates, bowls, cups and teapots, among others,” Kachhepati informed.

Tuladhar echoed Kachhepati and added that expatriate community was also growing a great liking for these products.

Stone ware ceramic products in local market are priced between Rs 295 and Rs 1,600, while the prices of earthen ware ceramics range from Rs 45 to Rs 700. Similarly, prices of ceramics with painting range from Rs 500 to 700.
