KATHMANDU, Sep 4: As more people are getting exposed to modern way of living, the use of trendy ceramic products for decoration as well as utility purpose is on high rise.

Such is the popularity of ceramic products that traditional silverware and cutleries as well as glass and metal utensils are fast being replaced.[break]

Prathana Shrestha, sales executive of Bhatbhateni Department Store at Maharajgunj, said the demand for ceramic utensils is on the rise in recent years. “Earlier, only high-end customers used to go for ceramic utensils. Now, even middle class consumers have developed a liking for these products,” Shrestha added.

Unlike traditional cutleries, ceramic items are user-friendly, light and can even be used for decorative purpose.

“Despite rise in prices of these products by five percent this year, the demand for ceramic kitchenware is increasing,” said Shrestha.

Still, ceramic utensils are cheaper than metal dishes. Ceramic kitchenware mostly comes from countries like India, China, Thailand, US, France and Singapore, among others.

Dinner set, cup set, soup bowl, open piece cup set, coffee maker, tea set, kettle, green tea cup, tea pot and flower vase are the mostly demanded ceramic utensils in Nepal.

Dinner sets at Bhat-Bhateni are available in range of Rs 2,835 to Rs 3,500, while the price of cup set ranges from Rs 320 to Rs 950. Similarly, soup bowls cost in range of Rs 180 to Rs 285 per piece and kettles are available in range of Rs 495 to Rs 850 per pierce. Coffee makers are available at Rs 1,057 a piece, while tea sets cost Rs 1,050 per set.

Shrestha said Bhat-Bhateni has been selling ceramic products worth Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000 every day.

Maheshwar Shrestha, proprietor of L M Stores at Koteshwar, said ceramic products are gaining high acceptance especially among younger generation. He further added that older people are still not attracted toward ceramic products because they think these products are not durable.

“One of the reasons behind the rise in the sale of ceramic items is that ceramic is one of the best materials for withstanding high temperature,” Shrestha told Republica.
