KATHMANDU, May 22: UCPN (Maoist) Vice-chairman Dr Baburam Bhattarai on Sunday said that parties should look for an alternative to the current Jhalanath Khanal-led government if it fails to bring the Nepali Congress and Madhes-based parties on board the government.

Speaking at an interaction organized by Reporters´ Club Nepal at his residence in Sanepa, Dr Bhattarai said a national consensus government comprising all major political parties should be formed to help conclude the peace process and promulgate the new constitution. [break]

“Our past experiences have already shown that government based on majority can not deliver peace and the constitution,” he said.

Dr Bhattarai said that the parties should give first priority to forming national consensus government under Prime Minister Khanal. He, however, argued that the UCPN (Maoist) should be allowed to lead the new government if the Khanal-led government fails to make progress on that front.

Dr Bhattarai also said that that parties should reach a “package deal” on issues relating to the conclusion of the peace process, fundamental issues of the new constitution, formation of national consensus government and extension of the CA term.

Dr Bhattarai also expressed confidence that NC would also support extension of the CA term that is expiring on May 28.

He also said that his party´s decision on the modality forwarded by Nepal Army on integration had paved the way for the integration of the Maoist combatants.

“The issues of number, standard norms, ranking and training are technical things. These can be settled through discussions,” he said.
