Police torch 100 ´squatter´ huts
ITAHARI: Police on Tuesday torched over 100 huts erected at wards 7 and 8 of Hansposa VDC in Sunsari district by people who claim to be landless squatters. Police torched the houses that were built by encroaching upon privately-owned land plots belonging to Bhadra Kumari Giri, Sharada Giri, Raj Kumari Rai, Rudra Dhungana, Deepak Shrestha, and Dharma Khatiwada, among others. Inspector Shyamal Subba of Itahari said police had destroyed the houses a month ago as well, but had to do so again as they were re-built. Police also detained seven people who protested the move.
Businessman freed after paying ransom
SIRAHA: A businessman from Golbazaar, Siraha, who was kidnapped 12 days ago was freed Monday after his family paid the ransom to the kidnappers. Kin of the victim, Saroj Sah, 19, of Asanpur-4, paid ransom to the kidnappers after police were unable to free him. According to Sah´s elder brother Binod, Saroj was freed him from Bariyapatti, a bordering Indian town. Apart from the ransom, the abductors also took away Rs 621,000 that Sah was carrying when he was kidnapped.
Few Koshi barrage gates opened
ITAHARI: The risk of flood faced by Nepali villages after all 56 gates of the Koshi barrage was closed following directive from the Water Resources Ministry of the Indian sate of Bihar has been averted after a few gates were opened on Tuesday. Sunsari´s Chief District Officer Ram Prasad Thapaliya said the gates were opened after the Indian state government was requested to do so. “The Indian side has also been alerted to inform us before closing all gates,” Thapaliya added. The state of Bihar had closed all gates of the barrage without informing Nepal to build a bridge.
Drunken soldiers beat up cops
BHOJPUR: A team of Nepal Army soldiers beat up Nepal police personnel on patrol at the district headquarters Monday night. The inebriated soldiers from Kalidhwaj Battalion manhandled the police personnel at 10 pm for no apparent reason. Head Constable Deepak Rai, and constables Khagindra Shrestha and Sanjay Yadav were injured. They are receiving treatment at the District Hospital, Bhojpur. The seven-member police team under the command of Assistant Sub-Inspector Bhim Bahadur Tamang was patrolling the area when the soldiers attacked, according to District Police Office, Bhojpur. Soldiers and police personnel had engaged in quarrels in the past as well, a security source said.
