Birendra Sainik, Bhaktapur, defeated Shramik Shanti School, Lalitpur, 6-5 in a tiebreaker after the match ended in 1-1 draw at the Dasharath Stadium. Roshan Rai gave the lead to Birendra Sainik in the 31st minute. Rai chipped in the ball towards the lower right corner in a pass set by Sudip Gurung.
Birendra Sainik could have capitalized on a defensive error of their opponent earlier in the 17th minute but Sanjeev Rana Magar´s shot from the box, after beating a line of defence of Shramik Shanti, hit the post.
Shramik Shanti leveled the match early in the second half. Saroj Rana Magar scored an equalizer in the 55th minute. The game headed for penalty shootouts after 80 minutes as none of the teams were able to add goals. Birendra Sainik´s goalkeeper saved two shots while Shramik Shanti´s custodian Kumar Gurung saved only one to give an advantage to their opponents as the score stood 6-5.
In the girl´s category, Jana Jyoti´s captain Yasodha Lama scored a hat-trick as they ousted Radhika School 4-0 in the final. Jana Jyoti took an early lead in the 10th minute from Sapana Lama´s goal. Skipper Yasodha Lama added three more goals in the 19th, 32nd and 47th minute to seal the match beyond their opponent´s reach.
The top four teams in both the categories received Rs 200,000, Rs 100,000, Rs 50,000 and Rs 25,000 respectively.
Third defeat for Nepal
Nepali U-18 basketball team were defeated 33-62 by Bangladesh on Saturday in the U-18 Asian Basketball Mid-Zone qualifiers being held in Bangalore, India.
According to the National Sports Council, Nepal´s team lacked coordination during the match. Nepal lost all four quarters 9-19, 6-11, 6-18 and 12-14 to finish at the bottom of the table in the tournament after the team´s third consecutive defeat.
Bangladesh´s Faren Aziz scored the highest 18 points while Nepal´s Ravi Giri netted eight points. In another match, India defeated Sri Lanka to claim the first position and qualify from the south mid-zone. Sri Lanka and Bangladesh finished second and third, respectively.
The Nepali team will return on Sunday via Gorakhpur.
Double gold for hosts
Hosts Morgan College won two gold medals in the opening day of the Morgan Cup First Inter-college Table Tennis Tournament on Saturday.
The pair of Renuka Khatri and Alina Maharjan of Morgan thrashed Selisha Khadgi and Anima Adhikari´s pair of Caribbean College 11-5, 11-6, 11-7 in the final of women´s doubles.
Likewise, Morgan won the gold of women´s team event as they edged past Prime College 3-0 in the final. Altogether 150 players including 60 women from different colleges are participating in the tournament organized by All Nepal Table Tennis Association.
