KATHMANDU, April 2: Nepal Bar Association (NBA) has demanded that it be consulted while setting criteria for appointment of judges.

A memorandum submitted by NBA to the Supreme Court on Monday states that any unilaterally set criteria would leave long-lasting effects in judiciary. [break]

NBA has come up with this position as the Judicial Council has long been working to set criteria for the appointment of judges. At the Supreme Court alone there are seven judges positions vacant.

NBA is also concerned about the delay, reportedly caused by the Ministry of Law, in the promulgation of the Judiciary Council Act (Amendment).

Most significantly, NBA has demanded that 50 percent of judges vacancies should be filled from the bar. It has also urged the SC to appoint judges from its recommendations.
