The NSU and Tarun Dal called for the strike after two separate reports submitted by State Restructuring Commission (SRC) proposed drawing two federal states for the far western region in the new federal map.

The NSU and Tarun Dal have demanded that all the nine districts of the far western region be included in the same province.

Earlier, Maoist politburo member Lekha Raj Bhatta, who is also the minister for commerce and supplies, had called for a far west banda. However, minister Bhatta called off the strike following a request from Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai on Thursday evening.
