KATHMANDU, Jan 6: The entrance way will lead you into an open area that has a small area for a bunch of kids to hang around and a concrete staircase on the right and an open kitchen on the left. Walk up the stairs and you reach a lounge that lets in a lot of sun light with comfortable seats and also a terrace section.[break] This is a make-yourself-comfortable Zoom Restaurant at New Baneshwor in Kathmandu.

Established two years ago, the restaurant stands right opposite to the Krishna Towers and is painted burnt orange. A bit odd it might sound; the color actually does well to the eatery as it flashes itself out in one of the busiest roads. It leaves us wondering: Isn´t a colorful environment a plus mark while at restaurants?

What´s up with the name? Lil Bahadur Basnet, manager, explains, “Zoom basically means in focus and that is what the name suggests.” Well we must agree to that for it did manage to draw our attention.

The interior of the restaurant is quite vibrant with Chinese lamps dangling from the ceiling casting an orange glow over the brightly painted walls. The space on the rooftop is breezy and offers a spectacular view of the sights around. You might want to leave the area for the warmer days and for this season, stay indoors for the air is cooler.

Chef Ram Chandra Thapa serves Chicken Takatak -- an outstanding dish that has chicken cooked to burnished gold and served with fresh raw salads or vegetables.

The chicken is first marinated in Indian style sauce and deep-fried till it becomes beautiful in looks and taste. The chicken then receives another marinating experience, and this time in Chinese style. Then the final step is to fry it in Chinese sauce and then sauté it with fresh onion, tomatoes and celery.

Chicken with dressing -- is the next dish and it receives much the same trick. Chicken, as the name suggests, is the base and there are vegetables to go with it. First the meat gets a tandoori marination and is roasted in tandoori style. Next, it has butter, cream, salt and pepper to go into it. The result, a beautiful dish that is crunchy on the outside and deliciously soft in the inside. The best part of it is the cream and cheese combo. Although it might sound like something a bit heavy for the tummy, it actually works wonders to give the dish a unique and smooth taste.

“The dish is exclusive to our restaurant, no other eateries serve the dish,” claims the chef, who boasts 12 years of experience working with food within and outside the country. His long time experience in India has equipped him with the skills to make wonderfully flavorsome Indian dishes.

Also, a must-mention item is the fish that comes drenched in Chinese sauce, grilled and served with spicy dressing.

“This is a wholesome dish and can be eaten as lunch or dinner,” explains Basnet. The fish comes along with blanched seasonal vegetables much like a sizzler and so will work as a meal giving a full-fledged feast experience.

Apart from these specialties, the eatery has many regular customers. From Aalu Paratha served with dahi or chilli-toast for breakfast to a regular Nepali thaal for lunch and dinner, you can hop in anytime you like.

Boasting a BHM (Bachelor in Hotel Management) degree and two years of experience from India, Basnet believes hot and sour are the two flavors that tingle the Nepali tongue and, therefore, the place specializes in dishes rich in flavors.

Service here is efficient with the ever-smiling waiters serving exactly what you want without intruding you in between your meal.

The place is luxurious and full of rustic charm. All in all it looks very tempting with the exclusive chicken dishes blended the Chinese way.

The Zoom Restaurant is open seven days a week from 8 am to 9:30 pm and takes party orders too!
