According to the officials of Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), the foggy weather reduced the visibility to near zero making it impossible to take-off and land any flights in Biratnagar, Bhadrapur, Tumlingtar and Simara. [break]
The dense fog in the eastern region of the country halted the air transport service completely, leading to the cancellation of at least 24 domestic flights. More than 100 flights operate from Kathmandu airport to more than a dozen airports on daily basis.
As there was no sign of improvement in weather from early morning in most airports of the eastern region, flights could not operate, according to TIA officials.
The airports in the lower region are often obstructed and delayed mostly in winter because of the dense fog.
The officials said they were hopeful of resuming normal operation as the weather forecast from Tuesday was slightly better.
However, the operation in other airports including Bhairahawa, Nepalgunj, Pokhara, Bharatpur and others across the country was normal.
Rupesh Joshi, executive manager of Buddha Air said they had to cancel all their flights to Biratnagar, Bhadrapur, Tumlingtar and Simara because of bad weather condition of those places.
Buddha Air operates six flights a day to Biratngar, two to Bhadrapur, two to Tumlingtar and Janakapur and six to Simara on daily basis. Likewise, the Yeti Airlines which was operating four flights to Biratnagar, two to Bhadrapur and Janakpur and one to Tumglintar also cancelled all its flights.
