Though the government´s student enrollment campaign has crossed a decade, over 7.5 percent of children in the district have never enrolled in school.
Parbati BK, 15, of Bobang VDC in the district has not enrolled in any school yet. Parbati works as a laborer to earn a living for her family while her friends go to school.
Like Parbati, there are over 3,300 children in Dhorpatan, Bogang, Rajkrit, Bhimgithe, Adhikari Chaur, Nisi, Devistathan and Bohoragaun VDCs have been deprived of education, according to District Education Office, Baglung.[break]
According to District Education Officer Nadalal Poudel, Intensive School Enrolment campaign has been launched in the district with the aim of ensuring education to all by 2015. “This year, we are planning to enroll an additional 2,000 children, who have been deprived of education. This will bring down the percentage of children not going to school,” said Poudel. “The campaign will continue next year as well,” he added.
According to a study conducted by the District Education Office, most of the children who are not enrolled in schools either work to earn a living for their family or assist their parents carry out household chores. The study also found many such children work in hotels and pull rickshaw to contribute to their family income.
The government´s nationwide school enrolment campaign, which started in 2004, has largely failed to address the problem of children from very poor families. The District Education Office, Baglung, jointly with Plan Nepal, Gaja Youth Club and Seto Gurash Children Development Center has launched Intensive School Enrolment Campaign to attract more children into enrolling in schools. The campaign will also assist the parents of children from very poor financial background to engage in income generation activities.
