Officials said they decided not to distribute the ghee item for now as they found that some ingredients were not as per the standards set by the Nepal government.
"It is decided to destroy some quantity of the vegetable ghee as one of the indicators showed that it is not as per the standard set by the Nepal government," Hari Naryan Belbase, head of Department of Commerce and Supply Management, told Republica.He, however, was quick to add that the product did not pose health hazard and the mismatch with Nepal's standard was not that serious.
Minister for Commerce and Supplies Sunil Bahadur Thapa, the ministry secretary and other top officials briefed a high level monitoring team led by Speaker Subas Nembang on the matter. The team had visited the corporation Tuesday.
Officials said that while the variance with Nepal's requirements was not that serious and there was no health hazard involved, they decided not to distribute the item to the public so as to avoid any confusion in the local market.
Various other items including rice, sugar, oil and flour provided by the UAE were found quite suitable.
The corporation has sent more samples for lab test in further study of other consignments.
The monitoring team led by Nembang also visited the Health Ministry to inquire about the latest situation in the health sector.
Earlier, the Nembang-led team also visited Nepal Army headquarters to inquire about the security force's activities and later inspected food stuff and other supply arrangements at Tribhuvan International Airport.
