However, Nepali weightlifters are coming home without any medals this time around. [break]
As 10th SAG gold medalist Kamal Bahadur Adhikari and bronze medalist Gyan Bahadur Shrestha both faced wash out in Dhaka, other lifters were under pressure.
Nepal´s final hopes from Punti Lal Yadav in 105 kg weight category and Gopal Bahadur Shrestha in 105 kg plus weight category shattered on Tuesday. Nepali weightlifters Hem Shankar Chaudhary (56 kg) and Bikash Thapa (62 kg) also lost their events earlier.
Punti Lal stood fifth while Gopal Bahadur stood fourth in their events. There were six lifters in Punti Lal´s event while there were five lifters in Gopal Bahadur´s event.
Punti Lal lifted 106 kg in snatch and 145 kg in clean and jerk to make his total lift 251.
Likewise, Gopal Bahadur lifted 112 kg in snatch and 152 kg to make his total lift 264 kg.
Nepali weightlifting coach Tilak Raut blamed insufficient training for the miserable results. He also said that players could not deliver as expected. “The training was insufficient and lifters also failed to deliver satisfactorily,” said Raut.
Raut informed his boys were still under trauma after the elevator breakdown at the Imperial Hotel, where Gyan Bahadur and Gopal Bahadur sustained serious injuries.
Punti Lal said he could not perform well as he was in anguish following his mother´s death. “The day we came in Dhaka, I heard my mother is no more. I´m passing my days in Dhaka remembering her. However, I performed for the nation and though I failed I dedicate this performance to my mom,” said Punti Lal.
Gopal Bahadur attributed unsatisfactory results to his injury after the lift accident. Nepal has won more than one hundred international medals in weightlifting.
