Villagers' drive to conserve red panda

KHOTANG, Sept 7: Local residents of Phedi VDC in northern part of Khotang district have started a drive for the conservation of the rare animal, red panda.



They have started the conservation efforts to save the red panda´s population that is in the verge of extinction. [break]



The animal is called ´Kudo´ in the local Sampang language.



They organized various programs to create awareness among the public and placed various hoarding boards in the local forests, said chairman of Fungalung community Forest group, Gyan Kumar Rai.



The local residents estimated around two dozen red pandas in the Bagale community forest, Chilime Lahure community forest and Chhimalung community forest.



The forests adjoin the Makalu and Sasgarmatha National Park.



The villagers have started the conservation drive after they found the picture of the red pandas in the educational calendar similar to the animal found in the forests. The animal is fond of roaming lone and eating reed shoots and fresh leaves.
