Wholesale and retail prices of popular vegetables like onion, potato, cauliflower and bitter gourd have increased by Rs 20 to Rs 45 per kg.
Wholesale price of onion increased to Rs 105 per kg on Monday, up by Rs 30 per kg recorded two weeks ago. Similarly, wholesale price of potato increased by Rs 30 per kg to Rs 60 per kg.[break]
Wholesaler at Kalimati vegetables market attributed rise in prices of potato and onion to supply disruptions. “Phailin Cyclone destroyed crop in different parts of India. This made onion and potato dearer in India, the major supplier, itself,” Sulochana Aryal, a wholesaler at Kalimati vegetable market, told Republica.
Retail prices of potato and onion have also increased in line with the rise in wholesale prices. Onion has become dearer by Rs 45 per kg to Rs 140 per kg, while price of potato has increased to Rs 75 per kg, up by Rs 25 per kg.
“We fix price in line with the wholesale prices of Kalimati vegetables market. If price increases there, it increases in retail market as well,” Chirak Lama, a retailer at Chabahil vegetables market, said.
Bitter gourd, cauliflower and tomato have also become dearer during the period. Wholesale price of bitter gourd has increased to Rs 100 per kg, up by Rs 35 per kg. It was retailed at Rs 130 per kg on Monday, up from Rs 100 recorded two weeks ago.
Similarly, wholesale prices of cauliflower and tomato have increased to Rs 60 per kg each. Cauliflower was retailed at Rs 95 per kg in the Chabahil vegetables market on Monday.
Bharat Khatiwada, former president of Vegetable Wholesalers´ Association at Kalimati vegetables market, said comparatively longer monsoon hampered vegetable production in different parts of the country. “This led to price in rice in both wholesale and retail markets,” he added.
