“Chainpur in eastern Chitwan and Shukranagar in western part of the district are good for vegetable farming. But vegetable farms are fast being destroyed to develop residential plots,” said Purnadatta Bhusal of Chitwan Fresh Vegetables and Fruit Producers Co-operative. [break]
A large stretch of arable land near the East-West Highway has already been developed into residential plots by land developers.
Vegetable farming is done in 450 hectares of land in Chainpur alone. People like Mullaha, who migrated from Chitwan, used the land that was lying barren for many years for vegetable farming. At present, 6,100 hectare of land in the district, which is double the figures of five years ago, is used for vegetable farming. Not only Chainpur, vegetable farming is also becoming popular in Bhandara, Birendranagar and Ratnanagar.
“With skyrocketing prices of land, owners decided to sell land to realty developers,” Bhusal added.
People, who used to work in these farms, have started migrating to Rajrahar and Dumkauli regions of Nawalparasi. They used to rent the land at Rs 20,000 per bigha from the owners.
Realtors started moving into village areas in Chitwan since November. As a result, vegetable farms are fast making way to residential plots.
However, Land Coordination Community, a forum of realty developers in the district, has decided not to develop arable land into residential plots.
