DHARAN, June 15: The doctors and medical students at the Dharan-based BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS) on Friday padlocked the education department and examinations office protesting the decision by the management council (senate) of the medical college to increase fees a week ago.

With the strike, entrance examinations of MD/MS and MDS scheduled for Saturday look to be severely affected. Talks between the agitating doctors/students and BPKIHS officials is underway to end the strike. The agitators have demanded scrapping of the fee hike. [break]

Earlier in the morning, agitating doctors and students clashed with police after police intervened while the agitators were on their way to padlock the offices. They had also chanted slogans against police administration and the college management.

Dr Balbhadra Prasad Das, vice-chancellor of the college, said he is positive about the agitators’ demand and that he would try his best to not implement the senate’s decision to hike the fee.
