SPORTS BRIEFS: Ruslan 3x3 basketball kicks off

KATHMANDU, June 14: GGIC C, Navodit and Premier Lions registered wins at the Ruslan Big Bucks 3x3 Open Basketball Tournament that kicked off in the capital on Thursday. GGIC C thumped Nakkhipot 17-6 with nine points from Manish Raj Rajopadhyaya while Navodit defeated Chelsea 18-10 with nine points from Pol Bikram Ale.



Similarly, Premier Lions registered a 17-9 win over NASA riding on eight points from Paresh Shrestha. In other matches, South Siders A defeated Premier Leopards 13-6 with six points from Minesh Shakya while South Siders B routed GPS 20-2. [break]



Sanjay Byanjankar netted eight points for the winning team. GGIC A beat Rolling Stones 16-6 riding on seven points of Karma Gurung and while GGIC B beat Premier Tigers 16-9. Rohit Lama netted eight points for the winning side. Meanwhile, Leaders enjoyed a walkover from Gyan Club.



Basketball, sports climbing teams off to China

KATHMANDU: Nepali basketball and sports climbing teams left for Haiyang, China on Thursday to compete in the Third Asian Beach Games to be held there from June 16-22.



The four-member Nepali basketball team will compete in 3x3 basketball. Sadish Pradhan is the skipper of the team and Robin Khatri, Binod Maharjan and Sujan Pun are the other players.



Similarly, the sports climbing team comprises three players -- captain Mingma Sherpa, Hariram Khadka and Niraj Karki.



Among the three different categories of climbing -- lead, speed and bouldering -- Nepali players will compete only in lead climbing. This is the first time that Nepal is competing in sports climbing. The climbing event will be held from June 18-20.



National Sports Council officials, including Member Secretary Yubaraj Lama, and others bade farewell to the teams amid a function on Thursday.


Coca Cola cup kicks off

KATHMANDU: The qualifying matches of Coca Cola Cup Inter-school National Boy´s and Girl´s Football of Central Region kicked off at the Dasharath Stadium, Kathmandu on Thursday. Altogether 176 boy´s team and 20 girl´s team have registered their names from Central Region. In the inaugural match of boy´s category played on Thursday Diamond School defeated Mangaladevi High School 2-1 in a tiebreaker following 1-1 draw in the regulation time. Earlier, Minister for Finance Barsaman Pun inaugurated the tournament. The inauguration ceremony featured march past from participating teams. Meanwhile, other matches of qualifying round will be held at Sano Gaucharan.
