SPORTS BRIEFS: Maharjan resigns from ANFA

KATHMANDU, Jan 9: All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) Executive Member Chandra Kumar Maharjan has resigned from his post on Tuesday. Issuing a press statement on Tuesday, Maharjan has stated that he had resigned after ANFA ignored his appeal against Star Club for match fixing in the last edition of B division league. Mahrajan is the president of Star Club.



He has also blamed ANFA of ignoring all of his genuine demands like providing voting rights to all A, B and C division clubs affiliated to ANFA. Maharjan was appointed the executive member of ANFA as the representative of B division club. [break]



Gyanu Baba finishes on top



POKHARA
: Champion Gyanu Baba Higher Secondary School finished on top of group A on Wednesday with third victory in a row in the league round of Shin Ramyun International Invitational Volleyball Tournament being held in Pokhara. Gyanu Baba finished with six points.



Gyanu Baba toiled hard to beat the Armed Police Force (APF), the champion of the recently held Dhorpatan Cup Tournament in the fifth set. After losing the first and third sets 19-25, 23-25, Gyabu Baba won second, fourth and decisive sets 27-25, 25-13, 16-14 to achieve the hard fought victory. Parikshya Gurung of Gyanu Baba was declared the player of the match.



The other departmental team, Nepal Police Club edged past Barsat Academy of India 25-16, 25-22, 25-21 to top group B. Police scored four points winning two matches of the league round. Chuda Khadka of Police was declared the player of the match.



Barisa Sabuj Association of Kolkata, India registered a hard fought win over another home team, Fishtail Higher Secondary School. Barisa won the match, 15-25, 25-23, 20-25, 25-21, 15-14. Honey of the winning side was declared the player of the match.



Twin golds for Police



DHANGADHI
: Nepal Police Club won gold medals under both men´s and women´s section on Wednesday in the 35th National Table Tennis Tournament being held in Dhangadhi, Kailali. Police edged past arch rival departmental team on both men´s and women´s section for the gold.



Sunwar, Makaju clinch gold

RAJBIRAJ: Mohan Sunuwar of Central Dojo and Sri Ram Makaju of Nepal Police claimed gold in the Fifth Lokendra Memorial Open National Judo Championship that kicked off on Wednesday in Rajbiraj, Saptari.



In the bout held under league basis, Sunwar of Central Dojo edged past Prakash Nepali of Police in the decisive bout after beating past three other opponents. In 90 kg category, Makaju achieved cent percent results for the gold while Sanjay Maharja of Central Dojo secured silver while Ritu Ranjali and Ghanendra Limbu of Mount Everest secured bronze.



In the women´s 63 kg section, Sunita Thapa Magar of MMAC saw off Nirmala Gharti Magar of Banke for gold. Similarly, the 78 kg gold went to Ganga Chaudhary of Kanchanpur and Deepa Gurung of Mangolian finished with silver.



The two-day long tournament thorough which players will also be selected for Mission SAG is being participated by judokas from host Saptari, Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Lalitpur, Kavre, Nuwakot, Rasuwa, Banke, Bardiya, Kailali, Kanchanpur, Parsa, Bara, Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari, Udaypur and Siraha along with three departmental -- Nepal Police, Nepal Army and Armed Police Force (APF) teams.



Meanwhile, the event started a few hours later than scheduled due to late arrival of the chief guest Yubaraj Lama, the member secretary of National Sports Council (NSC).



Judo in memory of footballers



KATHMANDU
: Interestingly, the judo championship is being organized in memory of late footballer Lokendra Kumar Shrestha who died in 2058 BS. The event is being held annually since 2064 BS. Shrestha born in Jaleshwar, Mahottari in 1991 BS was crowned with the special player award in 2016 BS.
