SARLAHI, Dec 4: Rastriya Prajatantra Party Nepal (RPP-N) Chairman Kamal Thapa has described the president’s recent formal call for consensus government as being both politically and constitutionally a controversial move.

He argued that the president cannot make such a move invoking provisions of the ‘defunct’ interim constitution and said the call for consensus is nothing but just a repetition of what the major parties have been harping on over the past five years. [break]

Speaking at a press meet in Sarlahi on Tuesday, Thapa charged the president of having come under influence of the four political forces, while making the call and said the state head should actually be able to give equal consideration to opinions of all political parties before making any such move.

Claiming that any government formed under the ‘syndicate’ of the four parties would fail to hold new elections, Thapa said a ‘neutral’ consensus government is the need of the hour to hold new polls in May-April next year.

If overlooked this need, Thapa further warned, his party would form such a government through street protest and added the current Baburam Bhattarai-led government will in no way be able to conduct timely fresh polls in time.

The pro-royalist leader also commented that there is foreign interference in the ongoing bid for formation of consensus government and said a government formed in such a manner cannot hold new elections in time.
