KATHMANDU, Feb 7: Clients of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) no longer need to bear the brunt of staying in long queues to pay their monthly power bills, as Prime Commercial Bank has come to their rescue.

The bank has launched a new service under which it pays bills of the power company´s clients on their behalf free of cost. [break]

This service is currently available to over 37,000 clients of the Ratnapark branch of the state-owned power company.

“To subscribe to the service, NEA clients have to open an account in Prime Commercial Bank and give us a written order to settle the bills every month,” Narayan Das Manandhar, the bank´s CEO, told a press conference in Kathmandu on Tuesday. “Upon this request, we will deduct the amount every month as per the bills prepared by the NEA and send the receipt to clients.”

Prime Commercial Bank and the NEA have already entered into an agreement that allows the bank to gain remote access to the billing system of the power company.

Although paying electricity bills through banks and financial institutions is not new in the country, none had offered a service like Prime Bank´s before.

This makes the bank the pioneer in introducing the service in the country.

“We hope this will provide relief to clients who don´t want to staying in long queues to pay their monthly bills,” Narendra Bajracharya, the bank´s chairman, said. “The service will also save transportation cost and allow NEA clients to enjoy the rebate the power company provides on timely payment of bills.”
