JANAKPUR, Dec 14: Dhanusha Police has been looking after a six-year-old boy for the past three weeks after no one came forward to own the child. [break]

The kid, who calls himself Bishnu Mandal of Kathmandu-Katari, was brought to the District Police Office on November 8 by a sage. The sage said that he had found Mandal roaming alone in the street before taking the kid home. He kept Mandal at his house for 10 days and then handed him over to the police fearing he could be called a child kidnapper, according to police.

Women and children cell of the police then handed Mandal over to Women´s Rehabilitation Center (WOREC) -- a non-governmental organization -- which took care of him for 12 days. But WOREC refused to look after him further and returned the boy to the police saying the organization is only for women.

Dhanusha Police has been taking care of Mandal since then and the boy looks set to stay there for a long time to come. He says his mother died during a fire in his house. “I don´t have mother. Father always beats me. Why would I go to such a house?” Mandal asks.

Mandal has taken a liking to the ambience of the police office and wants to stay in one for the rest of his life. “I will stay with police brothers and myself become a policeman when I grow up,” Mandal states. “I will pay back all the debts incurred while I stay here after I join police,” he adds and urges to make him a policeman when he grows up.

Chief of the women and children cell Subhadra Ale said the police have been looking for his family. “We have been trying to find his relatives on the basis of his claims that his house is in Kathmandu-Katari and his father is Ganga Mandal. But we have not been able to find any leads yet,” Ale said.

She said the search is still on in coordination with police in Kathmandu, Udayapur and Katari. “We have also informed children´s homes in the respective places and police headquarters but have not got any response till now. We will keep him with us and do as per the center´s directions,” Ale added.
