“We asked the Maoists why they failed to implement the deal. No provision in the peace deal, except the categorization of the combatants, has been implemented,” UML Secretary Shankar Pokharel, who participated in the meeting, told Republica. [break]
The NC and UML leaders had especially taken strong exception to the failure of the UCPN (Maoist) to return the properties seized by the party cadres during the insurgency to rightful owners.
“The meeting was largely limited to reviewing the seven-point peace deal,” Pokharel said.
Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal had replied that his party is sincere toward implementing the deal. The deadline for returning the seized properties, as agreed upon in the seven-point deal, expired on Wednesday.
During the meeting, the parties had also dwelled on the extension of the Constituent Assembly (CA) term and the formation of a national consensus government. The CA term is expiring on November 30.
“We asked the government to bring out a detailed roadmap and calendar of events for CA term extension,” Pokharel said.
NC leader Ram Sharan Mahat, who also attended the meeting, said that his party has demanded that the government create an atmosphere of trust for the extension of the CA term.
“We asked the government to come up with a calendar of events and create an environment of trust for the implementation of the agreement,” said Mahat.
The top leaders of the parties will hold a meeting on Friday as well to take a decision on CA term extension, formation a national government and the implementation of the seven-point deal.
