Men, it's all about your hair!

KATHMANDU, March 12: You walk through the streets of Kathmandu and you see all kinds of hairstyles on men. Bald, short and spiky, the long dirty look, the “Gajani” style, straight and puppy look, just to name a few.

Parted on the right or the left, spiked up or brushed down, bangs combed forward or gelled back, there are many possibilities for men when it comes to hairstyling; and if you’re confused about the look that suits you best, visiting the local hair salon should do the trick![break]

Over the years, K-Town has seen a lot of hairstyles in and out, but some just stick on and never go out of fashion. Whatever the case, Republica compiles a list of hairstyles for men that should have them standing out of the crowd this spring/summer so that you don’t have to wait for David Beckham to change his style so you can follow.

Korean style

“There are a lot of people opting for a Korean style look because they watch a lot of Korean films and serials and they want them, whether it suits them or not,” shares Raju Shrestha, hair stylist at VLCC located in Dilli Bazaar, Kathmandu. Shrestha, who got his training in India, has been cutting and styling hair for the past six years.

“I’ve styled a lot and the most famous one till date, as far as I can remember, is the Korean look,” he says. However, according to him, not everyone can carry the look well and that men with Mongolian features carry it better.

Layer cut

Though there are various ways of having a layer cut, the hair stylist will know how to cut your hair. “When I’m styling someone’s hair, I keep in mind the way he dresses and his facial features,” informs Shrestha. Not seen much in Kathmandu, the layer cut hairstyle gives your forehead enough space to breathe and actually be seen which the “Justin Bieber look” doesn’t allow.

Shaggy cut

Again, there are different ways of having a shaggy cut, depending on which one suits you better. “People with Aryan features can boast this style mostly, but also men with Mongolian features can carry this, depending on the way they dress up and the body posture they have,” informs Shrestha. But to have a shaggy or even layer cut, for that matter, one will need to grow his hair first to a certain extent and then have it styled.

Long hair gives a stylist more choice while styling but the process of growing the hair is the most difficult because you would want to look sharp most of the time. But the brighter side is that you’ll look sharper after the styling!

Fussy style

Men with short hair – though not so short that you can see the scalp of the head – can carry this look and you don’t even have to grow your hair longer for styling. “We’ve been giving a few people the fussy style look and they seem to have liked it,” says Shrestha.

According to the hair stylist, men come to his salon not knowing what kind of cut they want and don’t even care much what style they don. “We have to remember that the hairstyle isn’t just to look good but it also boosts one’s confidence and makes him look smarter,” says Shrestha.

Mohawk

The Mohawk style will probably never go out of fashion and it’s definitely not going anywhere anytime soon. If you want a Mohawk, you don’t necessarily have to shave the rest of the hair. There are different ways of having a Mohawk, and your stylist should know better.

Taking care of your hair

Styling your hair doesn’t necessarily mean using a lot of hair products. Some people have great natural hair and don’t have to use products at all; but for many, hair products are a must. But again, it doesn’t mean that you apply too much of it because that’ll affect your hair.

“Many people use a lot of hair product which can cause their hair to fall, dry the scalp and cause dandruff,” informs Shrestha, adding, “One needs to buy good hair gel, cream, mousse or hair spray to style their hair and not just a random one.” He suggests shampooing your hair every time you use hair product or just two to three times a week, if you don’t.

Oil massages are a must for the ones who use products at least once a week. A little pampering doesn’t hurt and you still remain a man if you take care of yourself, once in a while. Spas and hair salons in Kathmandu offer various hair treatment options, and going for one isn’t a bad idea!
