A central committee meeting of the party on Thursday took a decision to this effect after a series of meetings failed to clinch a deal on the names to be inducted into the party´s central committee, politburo and standing committee.[break] The party took the decision to avoid “unnecessary intra-party trouble” by promoting some leaders and neglecting others, said a leader.
“A very long list of leaders appeared for a limited seats,” said Maoist Spokesperson Dinanath Sharma. The party justified the decision saying that the party´s main agenda is agitation for peace and constitution writing, not the expansion of the party´s top bodies.
“The expansion would be resumed after drafting a constitution for the country,” said a Maoist leader.
After reviewing the lists submitted by the party´s 13 state committees, the Standing Committee had proposed three name lists -- each comprising 175, 275 and 375 members for the new central committee, but later decided to postpone the expansion altogether.
Originally, the party had decided to expand the central committee members from 137 to 175, politburo from 45 to 55 and standing committee from 16 to 20. The top leadership had also proposed a name list, but the central leaders vehemently opposed the list, saying that it excluded many deserving names. Subsequently, the party decided to make the top bodies jumbo and asked the state committees to submit names from their sides, which proposed hundreds of names.
