KATHMANDU, Feb 19: Ongoing National Leather Shoes and Goods Expo-2012, which is being organized by the National Leather Shoes and Goods Production Association (NLSGPA) in the City Hall, Kathmandu, has been attracting large number of visitors. The expo will continue till February 22.

According to NLSGPA, the event was organized to provide a platform for the small scale industries and to make Nepali consumers aware of high quality and beautiful designs of Nepali footwear. “Demand for locally manufactured leathers goods has increased in the domestic market as people have understood that locally manufactured leather products are durable, reasonably-priced and can now compete with international brands,” said Jeevan Nepali, coordinator of the expo. “Transactions are much better than our expectations as locally manufactured products are becoming popular among Nepali consumers,” said Nepali.

“At the expo, 52 exhibitors have showcased their products. But among them, the stall of Magic Slippers has been able to attract maximum crowd. It is one of the oldest Nepali brands and its products are believed to be highly durable,” said Nepali.

More than 350 models of Magic Slippers are available at the expo from Rs 320 to Rs 520. “All the raw materials are imported from Thailand and China,” said Dilip Ghimire, marketing manager of Magic Slippers. Going by the great response at the current expo, Ghimire disclosed his company is planning aggressive marketing to capture over 10 percent market in the slippers segment.

“More than 1,000 pairs of slippers have been sold from our stalls, so far,” Ghimire told Republica. He further added that customer can get one pair of Hawaii Slipper free on every purchase of Magic brand slippers.

Suman Gautam, a student of Kathmandu Model College, said this event is an eye-opener for him as he could see the wide range of locally manufactured shoes and slippers. They are cheap and durable compared to international brands. “I came here with friends and I bought two pairs of Magic Slippers because the slippers are attractive and the prices are also reasonable.
