CHITWAN, Dec 18: Tension gripped Madi area of Chitwan after irate locals turned violent and clashed with police, demanding an elephant that killed a couple earlier be put down, on Tuesday.

The angry locals vandalized the buildings of the VDC office, forest office and health and police posts, prompting police to intervene. Additional police force from the district police office has been dispatched the trouble site. [break]

Police fired tear gas canisters to contain the angry mob. Two persons have been reported injured in the scuffle. A day earlier, the locals had, in protest, padlocked the national park warden’s office.

A few days ago, the elephant named Dhrube had crushed to death a Bote couple of Gardi VDC-4. The locals fear that the agitated tusker might cause more casualties if not put down now.
