JUMLA, Aug 20: Incessant rainfall has led to massive landslip in Kalikot burying houses and displacing over a hundred families.

In Huchayabada village of Dhaulageha-3, landslip has destroyed 10 houses in a week, while displacing 135 families, according to the District Police Office (DPO), Kalikot.[break]

The landslip brought down three huge boulders the size of houses, displacing the whole village for fear that the boulders might slide further down and crush the villagers. The displaced are taking shelter in local schools and relatives´ houses. According to Dharmendra Shahi, a local journalist, those displaced have not received help from any agencies, apart from a local NGO.

With it being impossible to break down the boulders with local effort, the Home Ministry has been informed about the disaster, according to Chief District Officer Durgadutta Dhakal.

The Home Ministry has reportedly sought the help of Defense Ministry. The Randal brigade of the Nepal Army located in Kalikot is awaiting orders from the Defense Ministry, according to Dhakal.

The village is located 23 miles north of the district headquarters. According to Inspector Mohan Pokharel, the police are finding it difficult to remove the boulders as they do not have explosives.

The area is generally believed to be at high risk of landslides. Landslips have occurred in the past in the neighboring villages.
