Kathmandu, April 5: The Supreme Court is set to hear habeas corpus petitions today (Sunday) filed by CPN-UML Chair and former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Nepali Congress leader and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, both of whom were arrested in connection with the Bhadra 23 and 24 incidents.

The hearing has been scheduled after the defendants submitted their written responses following the court’s earlier show-cause order.

Police arrested both leaders on Chaitra 14, acting on the government’s decision to implement the recommendations of a probe commission led by Gauri Bahadur Karki, which was formed to investigate the Gen Z movement-related incidents.

Claiming their arrests were unlawful, both Oli and Lekhak filed separate habeas corpus petitions at the Supreme Court on Chaitra 15. On Chaitra 16, the court issued show-cause orders to the government after conducting initial hearings on the petitions.

Oli’s wife, Radhika Shakya, and Lekhak’s wife, Yashoda Lekhak, had filed the petitions last Sunday, demanding their release on the grounds of illegal detention.

The petitions argue that both the arrest and detention, carried out based on the commission’s recommendations regarding the Bhadra incidents, are unlawful.
