KATHMANDU, Nov. 21: Hearing on the writ filed demanding an interim order to give permanent status to the temporary judges of the Supreme Court or to extend their term without parliament hearing began at the apex court on Wednesday.

At the hearing held at the joint bench of justices Damodar Prasad Sharma and Dr Bharat Bahadur Karki, writ petitioner Achyut Prasad Kharel and Bal Krishna Basnet argued that an individual who has already passed the parliament hearing once cannot become ineligible.

The hearing would continue from coming Sunday with the participation of the amicus curie designated by the Supreme Court Bar Association and Nepal Bar Association.

The writ petitioners have called for an interim order from the apex court requiring the Judicial Council to immediately give permanent status or extend the term of the temporary judges of the supreme court as per article 155(1) of the interim constitution.

It may be noted that of the total post for 24 supreme court judges there are currently six permanent judges and seven temporary judges.
