Foreign Minister Ghimire returns home

KATHMANDU, July 6: Foreign Minister Madhav Prasad Ghimire has said Nepal has drawn the attention of the international community, including the UN, to seriously address the development issues of the least developed countries.



Foreign Minister Ghimire who returned home on Saturday morning after participating in the high-level meeting of the Social and Economic Council of the UN held in Geneva recently, said that Nepal, as least developed country, had strongly raised the issues of the least developed countries in the policy making agencies of the UN relating to the sustainable socio-economic development of the least developed countries. Talking to media persons at Tribhuvan International Airport, Minister Ghimire said Nepal stressed on concerted efforts from the international community for the holistic development of the least developed island countries.



"The visit was successful to inform the international community about the efforts of the Nepal government about the preparation for the Constituent Assembly election with active participation of all political parties," he said, adding that he held meetings with chiefs of the UN agencies, ambassadors to the European Union and others during his stay.



According to him, UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon was informed about Nepal´s commitment to the UN Charter, political situation, progress in peace process and government´s preparation to the November 19 CA elections.



On the occasion, Secretary General Ban Ki Moon said the UN was ready to extend help to Nepal for political stability and CA election in addition to the socio-economic development. He informed that the UN was planning to increase Nepal´s security in the UN peace keeping mission.



Responding to a query, Foreign Minister Ghimire said Nepal government was not for restoring Bhutanese refugees in Nepali society and even the UN agency was also not thinking about his.



On a different note, he said the visit of the Indian foreign minister in Nepal startring after two days would be a goodwill visit.
