Doc's negligence costs girl her life

MAHENDRANAGAR, Feb 27: Mahakali Zonal Hospital remained tense on Saturday after a girl brought there died due to alleged negligence of doctors.



Nilam Bhatta, 17, of Bhimdatta municipality 7 had fainted after being given an injection at the Mahakali hospital and was declared dead on arrival at a hospital in Banbasa, India, Saturday morning. Her relatives reached Mahakali hospital with her body after Indian doctors said the death was due to the injection. [break]



Nilam was a student at Farwest School of Medicine, that produces health assistants, was given the injection by assistant health worker Prakash Joshi on the recommendation of Dr Madhu Sigdel. She fainted immediately and senior doctor Khagendra Bhatta, who was summoned from his residence by the worried relatives, had referred her to India for treatment.



Irate relatives shouted slogans demanding action against Dr Sigdel and Joshi and received the body only after the hospital acknowledged the duo´s mistake. The duo refused to comment while other doctors also returned home without attending the patients.



Neelam had mild fever for the past few days which got a little troublesome Friday night. Her parents took her to the hospital early in the morning even as the neighborhood was preparing to celebrate Holi festival. “She had been studying till 11 Friday night. I lost my daughter due to recklessness of the doctors,” a devastated father Yagya Raj said.



The whole neighborhood was shocked when he reached home with her body while they were colored in the festivities. The Holi celebrations stopped and the whole village suddenly joined in the mourning. Her colleagues have threatened to bring the hospital to a halt if the guilty were not punished.
