CJ Regmi stresses on independent judiciary

KATHMANDU, Feb 4: Chief Justice Khilaraj Regmi said no democratic system could thrive in the absence of an independent judiciary.



At a programme organized to confer the Khilmika Laxmi Mainali Award and to mark the eighth general convention of the Mainali Society in the capital on Saturday, Chief Justice Regmi said the persons from judiciary need to raise voice for the independent judiciary. [break]



"I am confident that the new constitution would assimilate the principles of the independent judiciary," he said.



On the occasion, CJ Regmi conferred Khilmika Laxmi Mainali Award on Vice-Chancellor of the Kathmandu University, Dr. Suresh Raj Sharma and Professor of law, Madhav Prasad Acharya for their significant contribution to law education.



The award carries a purse of Rs. 20,000 each.



Award recipient Dr. Sharma and Professor Acharya said the technical and vocational education was the need of the day. However, they expressed dissatisfaction over strikes in education sector.



Two Mainali students were provided with the cash prize of Rs. 10,000 each for their excellence in the last year´s SLC examination.
