CHITWAN, May 5: Jewelry outlets in Chitwan have remained closed for the past four days.

Traders brought down their shutters to protest scarcity of yellow metal in the middle of the wedding season when demand for gold hits peak.

The decision, however, has dealt a huge blow on wedding shoppers. “I am very much worried. I don´t know how I will arrange gold for my daughter´s wedding fixed for this week,” Shankar Thapa of Bharatpur said. [break]

Demand for gold rises manifolds during wedding season as golden jewelry is regarded must have accessories for weddings.

Dealers say they just can´t meet the market demand as gold supply to the district has dropped to just 2 kg. Earlier, the district used to get daily supply of 5 kg of gold.

“We can´t meet the growing demand as supply of gold to the district has dropped,” Bipin Ramdam, president of Gold and Silver Dealers Association, Chitwan Chapter, told Republica.

Meanwhile, gold dealers on Sunday organized a rally in Narayanghat, demanding adequate supply of yellow metal. They also have plans to submit memorandums to Federation of Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers´ Associations, Ministry of Finance and Department of Commerce and Supplies Management on Monday.
