KATHMANDU, Jan 2: The government appointed Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rana Bahadur Chand as the new chief of Kathmandu police on Wednesday.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) transferred Chand to Kathmandu Metropolitan Police Range (MPR), Hanumandhoka, from the Nepal Police Headquarters. According to police sources, Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Bijaya Kumar Gachchhadar had proposed Chand for the vacant post to Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai.[break]

Despite Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kuber Singh Rana´s concerns over Chand´s appointment Gachchhadar proposed the name of Chand for the post that was lying vacant following the promotion of then MPR chief Jaya Bahadur Chand as deputy inspector general (DIG) on December 19. IGP Rana was not satisfied with Chand´s work performance.

Newly-appointed Chand assumed office following his appointment on Wednesday. "I will focus on curbing cyber crimes and violence against women and children," he told Republica. He also said he would give continuity to some of the good works of the former chiefs and formulate some new plans regarding public security in Kathmandu.
