Artists from 20 countries around the globe had come together to celebrate the life and music of international peace leader Sri Chinmoy. The first ever “Songs of the Soul” concert held in Kathmandu was a treat for Sri Chinmoy’s devotees and music lovers.
Beginning with the recitation of “Om”, the stage was set for an hour of meditative tunes. The language of the hyms—Bengali--might not have been understandable but the spirituality it evoked could be felt easily. Well coordinated and spectacular in presentation, the free concert upheld the spirit of human life and the necessity for peace.
Paree’s International Group, Vedic Fire, Vija Shanker Mishra, Kathmandu Female Choir, Shikhandidni and The Seven Stars-- all performed in sync. Each performance emphasized the need for spirituality in human life.
The screening of videos based on Sri Chinmoy’s life, shown in between the performances, informed the audience about the Guru’s life and mission.
His visits to Nepal in 1994 and 1999 were documented in them. It was during his visit in 1999, that the then prime minister Girija Prasad Koirala declared Nepal “ Sri Chinmoy Peace Blossom Nation”. There are more than 150 nations around the world who have declared themselves “Sri Chinmoy Peace Blossoms” nations.
Sri Chinmoy loved Nepal and had composed two poems about the nation after his visits. Both the compositions were performed by the artists at the concert.
Devesh Ghimire, a disciple and one of the organizers of the concert said, “We wanted to display soulful music and inspire people spiritually.”
On January 10, Monday a statue of the spiritual leader was unveiled by Deputy Prime Minister Sujata Koirala at the Club Himalaya, Nagarkot.
The World Harmony Run (Peace Run) is also being organized by the Sri Chinmoy Center in Kathmandu and Bhaktapur consecutively on January 17, Monday.
