CHITWAN, Dec 7: Chitwan District Court slapped a life imprisonment and confiscation of properties to murderers of Dhegani Devi Mahato, 45, of Baghauda VDC 2 of Madi district.
Mahato, a widow, was mercilessly beaten by stones and burnt to death by her relatives for “practicing witchcraft”, a year ago.[break]
District Judge Bholanath Chaulagain convicted Bikram Mahato, his wife Bikra Miya, daughters--Manju, Laxmi, Sanju and Krish Kumari--and son-in-law and charged them life imprisonment and confiscation of properties while self-proclaimed traditional healer Jogeshwor was given a life imprisonment.
Neighbors attacked Dhegani Devi after Jogeshwor accused the woman for practicing witchcraft. He later confessed he knew nothing about healing tradition.
