The combative force of the UML has called a general strike in Biratnagar for Tuesday demanding that the authorities acquit all the accused charged in the "fake case." [break]
The Youth Force activists held a torch rally on Monday evening asking the authorities to immediately declare Basnet, a prime accused in the attempted murder of prisoner Abhishek Giri, innocent and release others arrested in connection with the case.
The rally was led by Rabin Thapa, the Morang chief of UML-aligned Youth Association.
The activists made rounds of the city and chanted slogans like "Anti-Youth Force Elements Beware!" They also chanted slogans against the Superintendent of Police in Morang, Pradhumna Karki.
Thapa stated that his organization is compelled to take to the streets as the authorities have leveled trumped up charge against Basnet.
"The charges against our colleagues are fake. We will enforce a general strike in Biratnagar, then expand it to all across Morang district and then entire Koshi zone," he said.
Police have already charged members of Youth Force and Youth Association Mukesh Budathoki, Debananda Yadav and Manoj Singh, for assaulting prisoner Abhisekh Giri with the intention of murdering him. Giri was attacked on the premises of Biratnagar District Court while he was being taken to be produced before the judges.
Fugitive Basnet is reportedly protected by Youth Force chief Mahesh Basnet, who is the right-hand man of UML leader KP Oli.
Lawyers have strongly objected to the protest program aimed at influencing the case that is sub-judice in the court. "It is a blatant disrespect toward the judiciary as the case is being investigated by both police and court," said a lawyer who did no want to be named.
