In connection to the Nepali Memory Project, photo.circle is organizing a three-day writing workshop in collaboration with Katha Satha and Bookworm from June 17 to 19 at Bookworm, Jhamsikhel.[break]
“We had started the Nepali Memory Project to reflect on the interesting aspects of the diverse past, and this particular workshop is related to that,” said Nayantara Gurung Kakshapati, founder of photo.circle. “We’ll be asking participants to bring their old family photos and they will be writing something which will be pasted on the picture.”
She mentioned that the participants can write in either English or Nepali. The workshop will be conducted by four writers – Muna Gurung, Prawin Adhikary, Gaurav Monga, and Ajit Baral.
The participants will be going through their old albums and picking out three photos.

With the help of family members, or based on the participants’ memories, they will be creatively responding to the chosen images.
Facilitators will guide in telling, writing and performing the stories behind each photograph the way the image demands.
The participants will also be asked to do exercises that address craft issues of storytelling such as voice and style, and also carry a high level of discussion based on constructively critiquing their fellow participants’ work.
At the end of the workshop, the participants will be reading out what they have written during the workshop.
“Eventually, the text and the photos that the participants have brought will be incorporated in the Nepali Memory Project in order to contribute to the archive of that project,” added Kakshapati. It will also be showcased at a special presentation on June 25.
You can also contributing to The Nepali Memory Project by sending your images and corresponding narratives – photos and texts – directly to archives@photocircle.com.np
