Chanda, a resident of Chisapani of Banke district, was kidnapped on April 9 by TJMM cadres while on his duty to safeguard excavators kept in Holiya for construction of Rapti River embankments. [break]
Two out of the five TJMM cadres had taken Chanda across the border to Indian forests. They had threatened Chanda to pay two million rupees in ransom. Unexpectedly, Rafik Miyan, a resident of Hiraminiya, appeared in front of the kidnappers.
As he saw fearful Chanda flanked by two persons, Rafik noticed something unusual. Rafik enquired about them. The kidnappers lied that they were friends. Unconvinced, Minya kept on enquiring. Emboldened by a stranger´s presence and enquiry, Chanda disclosed that he was indeed kidnapped.
While one of the kidnappers fled the scene following Chanda´s disclosure, Rafik kicked away the other. Rafik, who had gone to forest to cut firewood, took Chanda to his home and fed him.
Rafik safely handed over Chanda to police on Sunday. Asked if he was not scared to confront the kidnappers, Chanda quipped, "There is no point of living if we stay home out of fear of those who do not work but survive by looting others."
