“Initiatives by the Ministry of Education and Sports and the active efforts of Tribhuvan University have led to the recovery of over Rs 104.6 million from professors who took study leave but did not return to service,” he wrote. “More professors are currently in the process of returning the funds.”

He said study leave at TU is meant to enhance academic capacity by producing skilled, research-oriented and globally competitive human resources. However, its misuse had resulted in both financial losses and institutional damage.

Following government intervention and internal investigations, legal and administrative actions have accelerated the recovery process, he added.

According to a committee formed to investigate the issue, an estimated Rs 2 billion is still recoverable from such cases. Committee coordinator Dr Jeevan Kafle said 398 teachers were found to have misused study leave, of whom 61 have come into contact with authorities so far.

He added that 44 teachers have already returned the due amounts.
