Mithumaya, 43, has been living with her parent´s since her husband Subha Singh forced her out of their home one and half years ago. [break]
“I was mistreated and forced out of the house by my husband and his second wife. I have been living in my maternal home for last one and half years,” said Mithumaya.
The couple´s relationship soured after Mithumaya could not conceive a baby even after several years of marriage. “As we did not have a child, he began to torture me every now and then. He used to call me ´infertile´ woman and blamed me for spoiling his life,” Mithumaya said.
“There was no point in seeking help from society as it, too, thought I was solely responsible for not bearing a child,” she added.
Mithumaya´s is a representative case of hundreds of Nepali woman who continue to face severe discrimination and tolerate physical and verbal abuses over the issue of infertility.
Though theirs was a love marriage, Subha Singh decided to marry another woman as he desperately wanted a baby. “His behavior suddenly changed after he tied knot with another woman. They simply could not tolerate me at home,” Mithumaya said tearfully.
“It is impossible for me to live with them now. I just want them to give me my share of land,” she added. As per Mithumaya, before their marriage the couple had no asset at all. Later they were able to buy around 3 katthas of land and a house in a village in Morang.
Following a complaint filed by Mithumaya on Friday, the police have begun looking into the case. “We have detained Subha Singh and are investigating the case further,” said Morang SP Uma Prasad Chaturbedi. “We will make sure that Mithumaya is not denied her legal rights.”
