Expressing serious concern over the decision, which gave 91 days to all clinker and cement importers and manufacturers to switch to laminated plastic bags, FNCCI has said the decision was not practical to implement. "Besides, the time pledged is too short," reads a statement. [break]
Contrary to the Ministry of Environment and Science and Technology´s (MoEST´s) assessment, the FNCCI has claimed that the laminated bags of cement are not environment friendly.
The MoEST while endorsing the new rule had said laminated plastic bags were environment friendly, and will also prevent seepage of cement, ultimately enabling consumers get exact weight for which they pay for.
“The ministry´s statement is not true because the cost of laminated bags are so expensive that it will, in fact, cause consumers pay more for the supply,” FNCCI has said in the statement.
Besides, FNCCI has raised question over the intent of the decision, as no Nepali manufacturers are producing laminated bags so far. "The cement factories will need to import the bags if they are to comply with the rule immediately," the statement added.
