SOLUKHUMBU, Aug 26 : It has been learnt that the office of Water Induced Disaster Prevention Division (WIDPD) in the district misappropriated over Rs 3.3 million meant for landslide management in various Village Development Committees.

The office has been found to have misappropriated the amount without carrying out any works for landslide management. After the daily newspapers reported misappropriation of the fund allocated for landslide management, the District Development Committee, Solukhumbu had initiated a probe into the matter. It was found that the letter pad and signatures of the VDC secretaries used in the documents were fake.

Before WIDPD launches any programs for prevention of any water induced disaster, the consumer group affected by the disaster should send a request to WIDPD. However, the budget earmarked for the purpose was misappropriated by producing fake documents.

Chaulakharka VDC secretary Dhanbahadur Basnet was astonished to see the recommendation which had his fake signature on it. “I have not made any such recommendation as no such project has been implemented in our VDC,” said Basnet. [break]

VDC secretaries of Salyan, Mukli, Nele, Bhakanje and Chaulakharka, whose fake signatures were used in the recommendations, have registered complaints at the District Administration Office demanding action against guilty.

“We have demanded action against the officials involved in using our fake signatures to misappropriate the fund,” said chairman of VDC Secretary Welfare Protection Centre, Pashupati Pokhrel.

Acting Chief District Officer Teknath Dahal said investigation into the matter is under way. “We are probing the case. We have been receiving complaints from the locals regarding the case. We will soon forward the complaint to the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority,” said Dahal.

Meanwhile, DDC has already asked the CIAA to investigate into the matter. “We have sought action against the corrupt officials,” said Local Development Officer Dilip Adhikari.

WIDPD engineer Tej Narayan Mahato admitted his mistake for not making a field inspection before releasing the funds.
