DANG, April 16: Normal life has been crippled in Dang, Banke, Bardiya, Kailali and Kanchanpur districts on the first day of a two-day banda called  by various Tharu organizations including that of former Kamalaris on Tuesday.

They called the two-day banda in the western Terai districts for Tuesday and Wednesday demanding probe into the March 27 death of Sirjana Chaudhary, 12, in a house in Lalitpur, where she used to work as a Kamalari, a bonded laborer. [break]

The house belongs to Yubraj Poudel. Today´s banda enforcers have alleged that the Kamalari girl, who hailed from Lalmatiya of Dang, was murdered and have demanded that criminal proceedings be initiated against Poudel. The victim was found engulfed in fire. She later succumbed to burns.

Transportation has come to a grinding halt due to the strike in all five districts since early this morning. According to police all major business centers of the districts including Ghorahi, Tulsipur, Lamahi, Deukhuri and Bhaluwang were completely closed due to the banda.

Over a hundred passengers have been stranded on the road at Baluwang, in eastern Dang, after almost half a dozen night buses headed to the west from east could not move ahead due to the banda.
