This was what VDC secretaries said to draw the attention of the government and political parties as they made public their decisions after the meeting of the Secretary Welfare Protection Centre Nepal on Sunday as there were many problems for lack of peoples´ representatives in local bodies. [break]
The VDCs are running with one non gazetted employee of the civil service for the past 11 years after there was no consensus among political parties on the local body elections.They have demanded immediate elections and warned to agitate, otherwise.
They said they are taking responsibility singlehandedly whereas there used to be 53 representatives including the VDC chairman and others. "We do not know for how long, we are in the campaign to pressure for elections," they said.
Centre´s Chairman Damodar Rijal said incidents of extortions and ransom are increasing in eastern hilly districts and Terai, and many VDC secretaries have been suffering.
They said a total of 18 VDC secretaries were killed in the conflict for political change and complained that they had to face accusations when they worked by risking their lives.
Anarchy is created in the name of loktantra or democracy when the political transition is prolonged and therefore elections is demanded, said General Secretary Mukunda Prasad Gajurel.
He also said still 20 percent of secretaries have not returned to their workplaces as there is no security and buildings or infrastructure. One secretary has been working for three VDCs in some districts and they have been bearing the brunt when one person is sometimes involved in five criminal gangs for extortions.
