KATHMANDU, Nov 24: As the major harvesting season approaches, the prices of popular vegetables have dropped over the week in the capital.

Kalimati Fruits and Vegetables Market Development Board (KFVMDB) -- a government agency that handles management of Kalimati wholesale market for fruits and vegetables -- stated that the price of big tomatoes dropped by one rupee per kg to Rs 35 on Friday compared to the price recorded a week earlier. Similarly, other popular vegetables such as cauliflower, broccoli and cabbages are also entering in good quantities in the capital from districts such as Chitwan, Dhading, Siraha and Saptari, among others.

Red potatoes and white potatoes have become cheaper by two rupees each to Rs 32 and Rs 27 per kg respectively.

Similarly, prices of carrots and cabbages also tumbled by Rs 9 and Rs 4 per kg to Rs 46 and Rs 26 per kg over the week. Local cauliflower, bitter guard and broccoli also became cheaper from Rs 28, Rs 46 and Rs 75 per to Rs 23, Rs 40 and Rs 56 per kg respectively.

Traders said higher volume of production during the ongoing harvest season of vegetables is the key reason behind the decline in prices.

“Production of vegetables in the capital and other source districts has jumped leading to the improvement in the supplies for last few weeks,” said Geeta Prasad Acharya, a wholesaler at the Kalimati wholesale market. He said surrounding districts of the capital Kavre and Nuwakot are contributing to higher supplies of carrots and potatoes for last couple of days.

However, the market prices of onions and small tomatoes have gone higher by Rs 3 each to Rs 43 and Rs 37 per kg. “Short supply of onions and tomatoes has led to the marginal rise in the price over the week in the capital,” Acharya added.

According to officials at KFVMDB, volume of vegetables, fruits, spices and fishes arriving in the capital´s Kalimati Market, the largest vegetable market, hovers around 650-700 tons each day , up from the volume of 500-550 tons a couple of weeks back.
