Binaya Shrestha, senior planning officer at Kalimati Fruit and Vegetable Market Development Board (KFVMDB), said the price of vegetables has come down mainly due to improved supplies. “Currently the Kalimati market is receiving 650 tons of vegetables a day, up from average daily arrivals of 600 tons a week ago,” said Shrestha.[break]
Vegetables like tomato, potato, cauliflower, radish, cabbage, French beans, bitter gourd, bottle gourd, pointed gourd, sponge gourd and okra have become cheaper by Rs 2-Rs 12 per kg.
The price of potato has dropped to Rs 27 per kg from last week´s Rs 32 per kg, while tomato is selling at Rs 30 per kg, down from Rs 33 per kg recorded last week. Similarly, cauliflower has become cheaper by Rs 12 per kg and presently selling at Rs 23 per kg. The price of brinjal has dropped to Rs 29 per kg from Rs 34 of last week, while radish is selling at lower price of Rs 27 per kg, down from last week´s Rs 38 per kg.
French beans have become cheaper by Rs 4 per kg and selling at Rs 58 per kg, while the prices of bitter gourd, pointed gourd and bottle gourd have dropped to Rs 20, Rs 30 and Rs 30 per kg respectively.
However, onion has become dearer by Rs 12 per kg and is presently selling at Rs 29 per kg.
According to conservative estimate, the demand for vegetables in the capital hover around 1,000 tons. Kalimati vegetables market along supplies around 70 percent of the total requirement.
The Kalimati market receives vegetables from Kavre, Dhading, Sarlahi and Chitwan districts. The market also source vegetables from India and China.
